Care after therapy

I have been bandaging my own legs for 2 months after lymphedema therapy and have gotten some compression hose to wear during the day. However, I had to take the hose back because they pinched the skin between my foot and leg and turned my leg blue. I am back to bandaging my legs all the time instead of just at night. Why is it that my legs are returning to their original size and what can I do about it? What could be causing my legs to swell again? I do MLD every night but don't know how long I should do it for at a time? Should I do it more than once a day? It's hard going to school full time, taking care of my parents and managing this disease. How does one do it all?

So Many Reasons,

There are so many reasons why getting wrapping and stockings just right. Congratulations on being able to wrap -- I made some aweful message before I got the routine correct,

But to your problem about the stocking. I'm not a therapist but it certainly sounds as if there are types of stocking -- Your therapist should guide you as to the right size and compression.

Then there is another factor. Are you wearing those stockings at night? Everything I've been taught is that stockings are for daytime wear but definitely NOT FOR WEAR AT NIGHT. At night you need to either wrap for to wear a "Jovi Type" (quilted) garment. This is so that the garment will not have too much compression, or slips out of place, while you are sleeping.

Sounds to me as that it is time for a conference with your therapist.

Happy Holidays!

I don't wear the stockings at night. I can barely tolerate them during the day. But my legs have ballooned back but to their original size and I think it's a combination of me not having time to put my feet up, drinking too much diet soda and the stockings being too tight. My legs are so big that they are shiny once again. Maybe it's time to go through another round of therapy. They go down at night and during the day they swell up. I have them wrapped tightly tonight to see if they will go down and they must have some because the bandages are becoming looser. But I'm off to put my feet up again and I've stopped drinking diet soda just in case that's the culprit or one of them anyway. But I am getting with my therapist next week.

Smile Good Resolutions

It sounds as if you know exactly what you need to do to get the swelling back under control.

This is a good time of your to make a list of 2011 resolutions to get things moving in the right direction. You might want to add to this list, propping up your feet while you are in because this helps gravity get that fluid moving.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Linda

Linda,
How long should I put my feet up because most of the time I'm busy doing something for my mother and can't spare the time to put my feet up although when she's on the computer, I manage to sneak in a few minutes to prop my feet up. I also think I might be bandaging my legs too tightly because sometimes they hurt when I finish bandaging. But there is also the sore that the stockings made on my ankle that hurt too. Thanks for the information.

Happy New Year to you too.

You have to be strong and find all the info you can ,and gravity is our worst enemy once we quit our MLD for more than a few days we pore down the drain all our work and have to start again . Best wishes for this new year blessings .

I have just gotten to where I can re-wrap my legs after a nasty fall from an ambulance. The problem is I have some stockings being made for me that I am afraid won't fit me because my legs are still big. It took me 2 months to get them down to where I could fit into stockings in the first place. My question is should I not get the stockings and go back to Lymphedema therapy for awhile or wait and see if my legs get any smaller by my wrapping them myself?
