Glossary definition--

acid mantle
A thin layer on the skin that is formed by sebum (oil) and sweat. This layer protects against the elements, such as wind and pollution. It also inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi on the skin. See Maintaining Healthy Skin.
