Lymphedema and Lymphoma Contrasted

Introduction

Lymphoma and lymphedema both affect the lymphatic system and the two names sound somewhat alike; however, there are very important differences between these conditions.

Lymphoma

          Lymphedema

Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system.

Lymphedema is not malignant, but it can be caused by cancer treatment.

Lymphoma is commonly identified as either Hodgkin’s lymphoma or non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Lymphedema is identified diagnosed as being primary lymphedema or secondary lymphedema.

Lymphoma diagnostic signs include  swollen lymph nodes , which are commonly known as swollen glands because infection is present.

Lymphedema diagnostic signs include generalized swelling of the affected tissues; however, the lymph nodes are not swollen unless infection is present.

Lymphoma requires immediate diagnosis and treatment.

Lymphedema requires prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Lymphoma is diagnosed and treated by an oncologist.

Lymphedema is diagnosed by a physician and is treated by a qualified lymphedema therapist.

Lymphoma treatment places the patient at risk of developing secondary lymphedema.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition; however it is not a form of cancer.

Conclusion

If you are reading this article because you are concerned about having swollen lymph nodes with no other indications of infection, perhaps you should be researching lymphoma.
