The National Society of Genetic Counselors is the professional organization of genetic counselors trained to perform genetic testing. The organization’s website www.nsgc.org contains a wealth of information including Find a Counselor. Here you can search by name, company, institution, location, or practice/specialization to locate a professional genetic counselor to perform genetic testing if it is indicated.

A consultation with a genetic counselor is helpful when an infant is born with swelling of the hands or feet. These can be signs of primary lymphedema, which is a genetically transmitted condition; however it can also be a symptom of a other genetically transmitted disorder in which this swelling is only one of many hidden abnormalities.

Genetic counseling can be helpful in identifing such conditions.
